Rebuilding Transfer Cases
If your 4-wheel drive vehicle is having power or performance problems, you may wonder if the problem is the transmission or the transfer case. Wondering what that is?
What Is a Transfer Case?
The transfer case is a heavy gear box that directs power and torque to all four wheels from the transmission. This is especially important in vehicles that have two-wheel and four-wheel drive options, and heavy vehicles that have to bear large loads like tow trucks.
The transfer case is also filled with lubricant to keep all the gears running smoothly.

What Do Transfer Case Problems Look Like?
Since the transfer case is an integral part of the power flow from the engine to the wheels, any breakage in the transfer case can have a lot of the same effects on your car as a transmission problem. You may notice loss of power from the engine, problems shifting gears, grinding noises, or even failure to move at all. It is also important to change the lubricant in the transfer case regularly. Debris and grime from regular use can build up in the lubricant and cause extra friction, heat, and wear in your transfer case.
Since transfer case problems look a lot like transmission problems, you need an expert diagnostic mechanic who will ensure that the proper pieces are replaced in your vehicle.
Diagnostics and Repairs
At Town Center Automotive, we know how to diagnose and pinpoint transfer case and transmission problems. At other mechanic shops, they may need to troubleshoot and make repairs by trial and error to find what is wrong, causing more downtime for your vehicle and a higher cost to you.
